With some shots, it’s pretty clear some editing work went into them. With others, it’s not so apparent. For today’s #throwbackthursday, I decided to look at an one such shot. Back in July, I was out shooting Patrick working on his slides at this one hill. It was very bright and sunny, but there was a lot of tree cover. This was actually the case for many spots where I was trying to capture downhill footage last year. The intense sun and equally intense shade in many areas made for quite the challenge to try and capture the action.
It was always a gamble to see what I would turn up with. There is probably a better way to do this, maybe with some flashes. I remember one photographer at Kings Gap having a few set up to fire he got some nice shots, but he was also locked to that location. (The occasional skateboard would also find its way towards one of his light stands.) I try to travel as light as possible. There’s also the concern of distracting the skaters with the flash. It’s been quite the learning process to figure out how to best approach this action in these conditions.
The image still had a little bit of noise, despite the ISO settings, but it wasn’t too terrible. It’s always better than the alternative of overexposing.
Finally, there was a little photoshop work, as I really wanted to focus on the primary subject. Gary was also a little out of focus and got a little bit of the motion blur. The background was such that it wasn’t too difficult to do some simple clone stamping.
