Boxers & Saints
review 1: Saints is one of a two part series by Gene Yang about the Boxer Rebellion and the rise of Christianity in China. This remarkable story is about a young Chinese woman who is rejected by her family and becomes a Christian to find acceptance. At first she is bored by Christian sermons and catechism, but when a group of Boxers attacks her town, she finds that her new beliefs are stronger than she thought. A very dramatic ending will leave you gasping.
review 2: Personally, I was more drawn to Saints, because of its protagonista. I could totally relate to her experience of being a devalued daughter and her desire to find meaning through religion. It was so sad to me for you to be able to imagine what kind of life she could have had if not for the war. Oi, that
... more religion (along with other things like nationalism) can be used to justify atrocities just strikes me as so senseless as to be incomprehensible. It makes for me no sense. less
