Let’s get this right off the bat: Strange Flesh is a porn game. Not just because it has some few ‘lewd’ scenes in it, but the whole game is all about sex. More specifically, how artistic expression and desire can bleed into sexual fantasies. In it, you play as a bartender of Strange Flesh, a seedy bar. But the game isn’t about you.
It is instead centered around Joe, a 9-5 worker who happens to stumble into Strange Flesh. As he grabs a drink, you’re able to hypnotize him, allowing you to enter into his mind. There, you fight off enemies in two ways: either by beating them up, old-school style, or by seducing your enemies with your cigars. This transforms your enemies into horned-up ‘slaves’ for either you to have sex with or until they orgasm. This allows players to gain health. This also allows players to gain corruption orbs which unlocks a specific ending. So to will beating up enemies, but grant you domination orbs instead.
What I really find fascinating about Strange Flesh, is while at the heart of it is a gay flash porn game, you can totally see a lot of heart, thought and talent went into this game. As a result, this plays as smoothly and as challenging as an old-school beat-em-up or at least a recreation of one.
The animation is clean and crisp, making each animation cycle smooth and not too clunky or choppy. The backgrounds and characters, though pixelated, are rendered beautifully, yet still, have the cartoony yet adult aesthetic that Blazingcheeks is known for. Aside from style and graphics, the fight mechanics are smooth and tight, with each punch going into one another. This is great when having to deal with too many opponents on the field.
However, there are some pitfalls that Strange Flesh falls into. For one, the difficulty curve seems less like a curve and more like hills. There are some areas that you can breeze on through. However, every once in a while, there are some areas that the game stops in, which a wave after wave of enemies seem to spawn in. This wouldn’t be bad, other beat-em-ups are known for this. However, while the fight mechanics are good, less can be said about the seduction mechanics. Worse, the more you build up the smoke, the smaller it’s hitbox becomes. Which was probably meant to balance the game, though your attack then has to be supremely accurate than normal, making it more frustrating than challenging.
For a team of three people though, they went above and beyond with the concept; taking a sleazy concept and pumping into a rewarding experience. Even better, Greatest Bear, the team that developed Strange Flesh, released it for free! Would definitely recommend checking it out, if for seeing what erotic or pornographic games can do.
