review 1: WOW - John Rain and Dox together again - what fun! The Detachment is the best so far in the John Rain series, with the action we crave along with political intrigue. No absence of plot here...the story fairly races along and is absolutely unputdownable. The ending was a tiny bit anti-climatic, but believable in a scary way. Eisler is the best at this stuff, I think. I just ordered the next one for my Kindle and found out it was just written this year! And...it is not in chronological order, but takes us back to the beginning of Rain's career during and just after the war in southeast Asia; A Graveyard of Memories is Eisler's prequel to the John Rain series. I'm a little worried that the series is going to end. I hope, like Child's Reacher, it goes on and on....I just en... morejoy it that much.
review 2: Nice touch from Barry Eisler, teaming up the major players of "Inside Out" with his original dark hero, John Rain. "The Detachment" is more than a sequel to "Inside Out" but it carries on Eisler's theme of a national security conspiracy, and very believably. Once again, the dark forces of government evil are ably represented by Colonel Horton, who is rapidly reaching Moriarity status. This thriller has everything one has come to expect from a Barry Eisler novel - in spades. If you've read "Inside Out", you must read "The Detachment." If you haven't read "Inside Out" you've really missed something. less
