BEFORE I WAKE

Back when the company Relativity was going bankrupt, an awesome horror director’s film ended up getting buried. Mike Flanagan, known for his directing work on “Absentia,” “Oculus,” “Ouija: Origin Of Evil,” “Hush,” and most recently the Stephen King adaptation of “Gerald’s Game,” had a film he had done right after “Oculus,” starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, and Jacob Tremblay (prior to him starring in “Room”) titled “Before I Wake.” When the company eventually went under, there was too much baggage attached to the film and no one would buy it to release it domestically, as it was released overseas and became available to buy long before it was even in theaters here. Now that Flanagan has produced some worthwhile features for Netflix and is currently working on the series of “The Haunting of Hill House” for them, they are the ones that purchased and are releasing “Before I Wake.” If you’re a fan of horror or a fan of Flanagan’s other work, this is the number one pick for your streaming pleasure this weekend.

Elsewhere, HBO has released all eight of the Harry Potter films, including my favorite, which is the last one: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” Despite not being Stephen King’s favorite adaptation of his work, “The Shining” is still one of my favorite films of all-time, with Jack Nicholson playing the titular character. If you have not heard, Mike Flanagan said in an interview that he would love to adapt Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining” titled “Doctor Sleep.” One of my other favorite directors, David Gordon Green, released a film with Nicolas Cage a few years back titled “Joe,” which saw him alongside Tye Sheridan, who will star in the lead of Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” out later this year, which is an adaptation of the Ernest Cline novel. Putting two of my favorite actors together, who just happen to be dating in real-life, “The Light Between Oceans” sees Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a couple desperate to have a baby and actually stumbling upon one that they take as their own. This is also adapted from a novel. Netflix has an array of other films to watch this weekend including “The Godfather” trilogy, the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie starring Johnny Depp once again as Captain Jack Sparrow titled “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” as well as Dave Chappelle’s two latest stand-up specials, which became available on New Years Eve, one of which mostly deals with Trump and the other dealing with the Hollywood scandals as well as touching on why Chappelle disappeared awhile back. If “Pirates of the Caribbean” doesn’t do it for you, perhaps Kevin Costner in “Waterworld” will. And almost taking the number one spot is an animated film from my childhood that I just could not pass up which is “Tiny Toon Adventure: How I Spent My Vacation.” When I was a kid, I watched it so many times that I still remember so many things from it, including the breath-holding tunnel scene where the duck character is on a road trip with the pig character’s family.
