review 1: I like crime novels (as well as other books) involving cold cases or making sense of past events, so I enjoyed this one too. However, the ending was rather dissapointing in the sense that some ends were left dangling. Sure, after reading the last 2 pages you could more of less gather what happened next, but I still feel this these events should have been described. Unless, of course the author plans to write a separate book about it ;) In a way you could say that the REAL challange for DI Pirie only began shortly before the last page. Still, a good read and one that taught me something about an element of the moderne British history, namely miners' strike.
review 2: Excellent book. Set in Fife, Scotland, twenty years after the 1984/1985 miner’s strike, the bo
... moreok follows the investigation of a kidnapping that took place in that environment and the disappearance of a miner at the same time. Two events in the current era spark the activation of these two cold cases. First a young boy needs a bone marrow transplant and his presumed scab miner father is a potential donor, but has apparently been missing since 1985, when he had been thought to have moved to England to join with other strikebreakers. Second a clue turns up in Italy related to a famous kidnapping and murder that took place around the same time. These two cases are reopened, and are then re-investigated by the Fife police and by an aggressive news reporter. What thus turns out to be four investigations are handled very well by the author and interest never slips. Of course the cases are inter-related but I will not spoil that for you! There is some nice descriptive juxtaposition of Fife mining villages, converted to commuter outposts of Edinburgh versus ancient Italian villages converted to tourist traps, and the reader is allowed to wonder if the increase in material wealth is worth the loss in community cohesion. The book also explores the tensions among the wives of miners during the strike, as side that is usually ignored in the depiction of the battle between unions and government. And a great story too. I wonder if it is to be the start of a new series or if it to be a standalone story. Either way, an excellent read. less
