review 1: Ms Mandel is a very talented writer and her first novel is very impressive. I was totally immersed in this book and was quite surprised that it caught me so off guard. I loved the story because there was a certain measure of mystique and the characters were all a bit off kilter...which I love! I knew she was a wonderful public speaker (from seeing her on her book tours) but her writing is so beautiful and at times lyrical...a writer to keep within eyesight!
review 2: This author has a wonderful style. The writing never gets in the way of the story. The language and the pace are so well done that you’re almost unaware of them, if that makes any sense. Lilia was abducted as a child and, as a young woman, finds herself wandering from city to city. She’s haun... moreted by questions about her past. The other characters in the book are connected to Lilia, in various ways, by fragile threads. It’s a story of searching for answers and longing for lost love. It’s a fairly dark story inhabited by some damaged and lonely people. I thought it was an excellent book. I’m looking forward to reading another book by this author. less
