review 1: One of the best books I've read in a long time, "The Tulip Eaters" by Antoinette van Heugten is a tautly written mystery about Nora de Jong, a young single mother who returns home from work as a pediatric surgeon one evening to find her mother, Anneke murdered, and Nora's six month old daughter, Rose, missing. Adding to the horrific scene, is the presence of an unknown dead man on the floor with a WWII issue gun at his side. The story takes reader from present-day Houston to Amsterdam in a frantic search for baby Rose, the killer's identity, and the unraveling of decades of deceit about Nora's identity and her parents' role during the war in the Netherlands. Fast-paced, surprise twists and interesting characters, "The Tulip Eaters" is a story about how family binds us toge... morether, and how the truth is often hidden and misrepresented. I look forward to reading more works by author Antoinette van Heugten.
review 2: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.A contemporary murder that turns out to be a revenge killing precipitated by events during WWII in the Netherlands. Implausible (though probably not impossible) concept and an ending that tied everything up too neatly. The reader had figured it out but the author had the main character find a letter that explained everything. An unnecessary addition that suggests the author didn't trust her own writing or story or the readers. But my main problem with this book was that all the true facts were fascinating and I wanted more of them with more context. I think the author was equally fascinated and wrote a book where she could drop them in. Not the best way to write a novel. less

Such a good premise but then moments things were toooooooo far fetched for fiction.
