Adam Sandler woke up and started talking to himself. He was going through his filmography, pausing at certain points, points such as Punch Drunk Love. He tried to move on from these films through his self conversation, but ended up having to lie down due to an intense bout of sweating. He’d forgotten those acting days, and so he called up his friend Ben Stiller who was having a similar incident that same morning. The two got together and signed on for The Meyerowitz Stories to rekindle past glories. At least, that’s how I like to think it happened.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New And Selected) has that Royal Tenenbaums thing going for it, a quirky family dealing with a father who acts as the magnet, repelling and attracting his children in equal measure. The story acts are presented as chapters showcasing the ways this father selfishly reacts to the world around him, and the way he treats each of his offspring differently regarding their artistic failures. The best humour comes through subtleties, and these subtleties are created via a cast who click, even when they’re screaming obscenities at each other. That’s family for you.

Despite the ‘new and selected’ addition to the title, the film doesn’t jump back and forth through time, instead opting for a linear story which uses the chapter breaks to skip a few scenes to keep us guessing what took place in between. It’s a steady acting reunion for lost souls. That’s the real story here.
