The Playdate 2 (Pages 53 – 159)

SPOILERS!!!

These three women are quite bizarre. I thought it was just Debs, but both Callie and Suzy have their peculiarities.

Callie goes back to work, which she is afraid to tell Suzy, but eventually she does so. When she starts works, Callie realises how much she had missed it. For some reason she gets to the conclusion that she should try to cool her relationship with Suzy. Why? She reflects that their friendship is circumstantial; two lonely women who have no one else to turn to. I can understand that, but why does she need to cut her ties with her friends? Suzy has been there for her all this time, so why doesn’t she want her friendship now?

Suzy is also weird. Her relationship with her husband is not the perfect story that we were led to believe. Apparently, she suspects that he is having an affair with someone at work called Sasha, and now Suzy has hired a woman, Vondra, to spy on Jez. Suzy fears he will want to divorce her, and I am not sure if it is love what Suzy feels for her husband. What she really longs for is another baby, and without a husband that won’t happen. Then we know that she has a tendency to depression, and in the past she had a tendency to cut herself.

As for Debs, she is really peculiar, complaining about the noise that Suzy’s children make and she even calls Heathrow to complain about the planes flying over her house. From her conversations with her husband, we understand that there is a story with a girl called Daisy Poplar, and that is the reason why they left their previous town. What happened to Daisy? Did Debs hurt her in any way, or did the girl got hurt when she was under her responsibility? Debs is a teacher, and now she works in the after-school club that Rae attends after Callie starts work.

Then something happens. One day Callie is late leaving work, so she calls Suzy to pick up Rae from the after-school club. Then when Callie is finally on her way home, Suzy calls, telling her that Rae has fallen on the road and has a cut. Callie is very upset. Several times she has warned Suzy several times that because of her operations, Rae has problems of coordination, so she should hold her hand to cross the street. Callie rushes to A&E and finds that Rae is okay. Suzy tells her that she wasn’t with Rae when she fell. Apparently, when she was about to leave her house, one of her twins started vomiting, so she remembered that Debs was a teacher in the after-school club, so she called the school and asked the woman to bring Rae home. Then when everything was calm at home, Suzy went to meet them on their way, and then it was when Suzy saw Rae lying on the floor, and there was also a bike. What Suzy thinks happened is that Rae fell, and the cyclist must have also fallen off the bike to avoid hitting her. What Callie doesn’t understand is why Debs is not in the hospital to give her some kind of explanation, and according to Suzy, the woman left without saying a word.

I am curious to know what Debs’s problem is, and what happened to the girl she often dreams about. And what happened when Rae had her accident? Was it just a distraction or something else?
