review 1: This book had a lot of reality in it as far as relationships are concerned. You fall in love, you fall out of love, get divorced and then you are alone. The characters in this novel drag you in to their personal lives. Each one of them has some kind of romantic story behind them. And even a marriage or two that ends in disaster. Love is blind, is that what they say? Betty goes through a dragged out divorce while watching her ex-husband carry on an affair with another woman. Betty has two grown daughters that stay by her side, even when Betty dies shortly after the divorce is finalized. Miranda and Annie each has love affairs that take them on ups and downs. I did like this book as I have seen that love can make you happy one moment and with a blink of any eye leav... moree you cold and alone. You really feel compassion for these characters. There is a little boy involved also named Henry and his father Kit. The little boy is like a magnet to Miranda as she had a fling with Kit. There is something about this book which will remind you of Romeo and Juliet.
review 2: I listened to this book because it is a modern retelling of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and because I read a good review of it somewhere. Surprise--Schine can't measure up to Austen's talent for great characters and satisfying plot resolution. Who can? But most of Schine's characters are outright annoying, and the plot resolution--which I gather was supposed to be a clever twist on Austen's--was deflating. Not worth the time. less
