There’s something wrong with Aunt Diane was realised in 2011 by HBO Documentary Films. I viewed this documentary myself for the first time just last year and found it chilling. To this day i still don’t know what was wrong with Aunt Diane…
The documentary follows the aftermath of the 2009 Taconic Parkway crash in which Diane Schuler drove her red mini van the wrong direction down the freeway. She crashed into an oncoming vehicle killing it’s 3 passengers, herself, her daughter and her 3 nieces. The only lone survivor was her son.
But just 5 days after the funeral of Diane Schuler, police issued a statement which revealed the mother of 2 had a blood alcohol content of 0.19% while the legal limit is just 0.08%. The toxicology also showed that high levels of THC were present, the main ingredient found in marijuana. So was this a case of a drunk, high and reckless driver?
The documentary makers set out to explore the mystery of this tragedy. The Schuler family categorically states Diane was not an alcoholic and could not have done it intentionally. Witnesses that day who remembered seeing Diane have stated:
“She certainly seemed sober to me.”
“No obvious signs of intoxication.”
Chilling footage seen in the documentary shows Diane stopping at a gas station to ask for some pain medication. The footage does not appear to show a drunk mother, a women stumbling for side to side or certainly a women who is about to drive her car down the wrong side of the road and kill 8 people.
Only about 2 hours after this, Diane’s niece phoned her father and uttered that eerie phrase, “There’s something wrong with Aunt Diane.” Her family states her nieces said on phone calls that followed that “Aunt Diane couldn’t see” or “Aunt Diane doesn’t feel well.” Leading her family to believe that she suffered from some sort of medical emergency, possibly a stroke which caused the faulty toxicology report. But an empty bottle of absolute vodka was found in her car after the crash. Click here for the original police report
So what really happened to Aunt Diane? Was it stroke? Was she a closet alcoholic? Was is it suicide? If you want to delve into the mystery more, then this documentary certainly does that. It will leave you on the edge of your seat.
