review 1: This one has to sit for a bit for me to really know how much I liked it. The walk-off image was grand, in any case, and I had a nice excuse to buy a bottle of pisco and try my hand at making saltenas for book club. The Bolivian history and depiction of the culture was wonderful. I slogged through the economics lessons (Mountford thankfully breaks away from those lessons at just the right moments). I still wonder about all the sex (male authors, I tell you). But all in all, a darn fine book for putting a good story to a relevant topic in an interesting part of the world, illuminating a lot of things I didn't know about, as well as things our culture knows all to well -- namely, greed. I'm in the middle of his next book, "Dismal Science," which parallels this book quite a bi... moret. So more to come, I suppose. Will be interested to see what else he writes.
review 2: The financial jargon and historical references may alienate some readers, but this book is more than a formulaic attempt at imaginative non-fiction. Mountford introduces characters that understand that risk and entropy are at the forefront of everything society holds dear, and that your salary and your relationships have the quality of transactions recorded and scrutinized as a means of mental exercise. less

It's a good first effort, predictable, but balanced out by how cautionary the tale is.

When Bonnie gives a book five stars, I add it to my to-read shelf.

A good morality tale for the upwardly mobile. Not too preachy.

One of my favorite recent fiction books in a long time.
