review 1: I had never read a book by Sarah Jio, but I'm so glad I have. Blackberry Winter is a wonderful story of loss and finding hope. The story is told by two woman, one in 1933 and the other one in present day. The chapters alternate between the two women and is very easy to follow along without getting lost.On May 2, 1933 Vera Ray, a single mother is raising her three year old son Daniel without any support from family or Daniels father, for whom she still loves and yearns for. On this day Vera leaves to work the night shift at a hotel, with no one to watch Daniel that night and figures everything would be ok since she would return home before he wakes up. When her shift ends she walks out and see that a snow storm had hit the city. The storm is known as a blackberry storm.When... more she arrives home she finds that her son is gone. She frantically starts looking for him. She calls the police and they said he just ran away. Really!? what three year old runs away from home and in a snow storm. Vera continues looking for her son, whom she loves more than anything and won't give up until she finds him.May 2, present day. Claire Aldridge is a reporter for the Seattle Herald Newspaper. Claire had a tragic accident a year earlier and isn't really herself. On this morning she wakes up to a freak snow storm that has laid a blanket of snow across the city and shutting it down. When Claire arrives at work, she is approached by her boss who wants to her to write a story about this blackberry storm that hit almost 80 years ago to the day. While investigating the snow storm of 1933 she runs across a newspaper clipping about a boy who vanishes in the snow storm and has never been found. She decides that this will be her angle to make this snow storm link to the past and to find out what happened to little Daniel and what became of his mother Vera. The author did a wonderful job of pulling you into the story and feeling everything that these two ladies felt, each dealing with their own personal tragedy, and how these two lives are linked to one another.
review 2: This was my first experience with a Sarah Jio novel. If you are looking for a quick, but enjoyable read this is a good one. The story revolves around two women, Vera Ray and Claire Aldridge. Vera is a poor single mom living in the 1930s whose son mysteriously disappears during a freak winter storm known as a Blackberry Winter. Claire Aldridge is the reporter who picks up her story when another freak Blackberry Winter hits roughly 80 years later. During the process of her investigation the book flips back and forth between both women, giving back story to their lives. In between the backstory, subtle hints peek into where the story is moving and what might have happened to the missing boy. As soon as a woman with a fancy hat was mentioned, I had a sneaky suspicion who abducted the little boy. I wasn't wrong. However, just when you think you've figured out the story, Jio twists it around, leaving you with a different ending. This was a great story. The only issue I had with it was that too many circumstances were solved very conveniently. Claire didn't really have to do a lot of searching for evidence, rather the evidence for what happened to Vera and Daniel plopped itself into her lap. I liked how she mingled the two women's lives together. Even more, I liked how she twisted the ending to be not quite what you expected. less
