review 1: This book ended up being very different than I expected it to be, and I loved it! The horror that Joy has gone through in her young life is unthinkable. It's especially difficult to read her flashbacks and about her dreams, but they are important to the story line. The way that Joy experienced highs and lows throughout her recovery seemed very realistic since people with anxiety and depression have days where they feel fantastic and others where they feel like they've made no progress and that things are hopeless. I loved seeing the developing bond between Joy and her Uncle Rob throughout the book. The only thing that bothered me a little bit is that some of the dialogue between characters in certain scenes felt forced and over-dramatized. Despite this, I still think it's ... morea book worth reading, and I think that many teens and young adults can relate to certain things going on in Joy's life.
review 2: Read an ARC received at TLA in April. Joy has lived an unimaginable life of abuse isolated by her mother. The horrible things that happened to her are related little by little through the story. We meet Joy when she has been rescued by her aunt and uncle and they have taken her fully into their lives. Joy feels guilty that she has disrupted their lives and she longs to be normal instead of crazy. Joy keeps a running list of ways she thinks make her different from everyone else in the world. In the beginning she is in intensive therapy but that seems to fade some as she makes progress coming out of the dark place the abuse has put her. Joy learns to navigate school, cliques, siblings, and even romance which all seemed to happen a little too quickly considering her past. An inside look at how abuse affects the victim and the people around them. less
