Tiny Big Action #4 A walk down the (fruit and veg) aisle

Somewhat delayed with the undoubtedly highly anticipated return….but here is:

Tiny Big Action #4

(If you make it to the end you’re in for a treat!)

Earlier on this week I was whooping and cheering in my car on the way to work when I heard the news. Not often that happens!

But why? I hear you ask.

Well, dear reader, I shall tell you for why.

The headline I heard was:

Yassssss!!!!!

If I had been listening to the rest I would have also heard that

However, I did not and so I bounced off into work. Much like Tigger.

I do agree that 2042 is more than a little faraway. I’ll be 51 by then. Cor blimey. And I do think something more needs to be done now. Like yesterday. And I do know that some people are sceptic and believe it is a ploy to get the youth vote. However, we have to focus on the positives…

Ever since Sir David A did what he does best on Blue Planet 2 and showed millions of viewers what plastic can do to our poor sea creatures I feel like everyone has been totes on board with planet-saving.

Cheers David.

Obviously like everyone else I follow Cats of Instagram on Instagram. Who doesn’t?

(One on the left is mine/the family’s. Beyond cheeky. You’re welcome.)

But I have also found that there are more than just cute pictures and videos of cats on there. I know. Who knew?! And so I follow a few environmental bits and bobs and they obviously talk about this kind of thing on the reg. However, I do feel like I have seen non-environment-centred accounts taking up challenges, much like the TinyBig actions!

What a time to be alive!

Part of the reason I haven’t blogged for a while is because I became a little overwhelmed with it all. All of the actions we take on a regular basis that is affecting our little Earth. I drive a car, I sometimes eat meat (King. Prawns. Every. Time.), at work I rarely photocopy something right first time and so end up wasting paper like nobody’s business.

Mostly though, it has been plastic. Plastic preying on my mind.

The fact that most of the food I eat arrives in plastic packaging really stresses me out if I really think about it.

But enough of that. This is no sob story. Ain’t nobody got time for worrying.

The whole reason I started this blog was because it can be majorly overwhelming and super scary to think of all the ways we are currently making a bit of a mess of our only home. TinyBigBlog is all about the tiny actions you can start to make to your life that have a big impact and there are so many plastic-related TinyBig actions out there. But I shall start with one that is sort of current…

Plastic bags.

Not THOSE plastic bags but the ones we use in the fruit and veg aisle.

About a year and a half ago I was doing a lot of food shopping and it struck me that despite the 5p charge on the big checkout bags, not a penny was charged for using the wispy little things in the F&V aisle. And so, in my own melodramatic way I decided I was on a mission to never use one ever again. Ever.

If you think about it, those pesky little plastic bags do relatively little to prevent your apples and pears from bruising. As for those huge juicy oranges, some of those bad boys don’t even fit in the bags properly!

Man, I love those oranges.

I found that, although it is a little tricky to carry 6 apples plus the rest of your shopping if you’ve forgotten your big reusable carrier bags, it often started a conversation with the cashier. Something a little like this:

Me: Sorry about my apples.

Cashier (let’s call him Hector): No worries.

Me: I am trying to cut down on plastic.

Hector: Very good.

Me: And really I don’t need a bag for these cheeky critters.

Hector: Very true. There is an awful lot of packaging these days.

Me: Isn’t there?! It’s cray! We could use recycled cardboard or paper or encourage people to use handkerchiefs like that zany zero waste girl does (trashisfortossers #idol. Yes I have mentioned her before. Yes I will mention her again. Yes I would like to be her bestie. No I don’t think that’s weird.)

Hector: You go gurrllll!

Me: Thanks dude.

…true story…

Honestly though, I have genuinely had a few of these conversations, as has my mother the legend that she is. We are slowly but surely realising that plastic isn’t so fantastic.

So go orrrnnnnn, give it a whirl and a twirl.

Also, as a little cheeky dare:

If you, spot a sticker on your fruit or veg, peel it off and stick them on one fruit.

I appreciate that this might sound a little ridic but the method behind the madness is that someone will see that apple with 7 stickers on it and maybe they will start to question why we use them.
