review 1: Liz Jensen has always been good with crazy characters, to put it simply. From the dreamworld of injured boy Louis Drax to every single character in Egg Dancing, her knack for bringing out the funny in the worst situations has enthralled me. Jensen's characters have never been too dark for me, but still less laissez-faire than the semi-autobiographical works of Carrie Fisher. With The Rapture, Jensen has cemented her place as my favourite living author bar none. The setting may seem familiar - an asylum - but unlike her previous novels where one could still detach from characters' personal throes of drama, The Rapture gets darker, more serious and definitely closer to home with its look at religious fundamentalists, climate change, and the personal push-pull between protagon... moreist and damaged psychiatrist Gabrielle and her violent charge Bethany. Much like how Armistead Maupin's The Night Listener put comedy in the backseat and addressed darker themes (based on a true story), The Rapture is Jensen's step into better, more beautiful characterisation. As with her previous novels, the protagonist narrates the story, and because of Gabrielle's condition, I could feel her anger, her pain, her fear, and so clearly, her love for the scientist. With such a vulnerable narrator, Jensen takes this crazy story into a much darker place. And surprisingly, I, who prefer my novels to maintain a degree of lightness, LOVED IT. I think Liz Jensen deserves that 'underrated' tag now, more than ever. Please, more.
review 2: This is the first book i have picked up after 5 or 6 years. After a couple of false starts (Thanks Sisters), i got sucked into this book. There were a few big words i had to look up.It was nicely paced out.The girl. Bethany, i liked her in this book, but probably not in real life. The reason it is a 3 is because to me there wasn't any major excitement until the last 30 or so pages, and the fact that the person who i thought would e a single time use at worst and a background character at best became the romantic interest. less

Good read from start to finish, one obvious plot line, but on the whole a good read
