review 1: Journey Into the Past is a wonderful lament on time, memory and relationships. The delivery and structure of the novel is deceptively simple. Written in the first person without timeshifts other than the recollection of memories it presents as a simple love story. However through sheer prose skill, weight and description the novella hurtles towards its inevitable finale. Life is about timing and you cant go back
review 2: With great, yet subtle, psychological depth Zweig examines what happens we we try to get the past to align with a present that has zagged off in another direction - one which we did not fully choose ourselves. This is a book about thwarted plans and desires; about inner selves that are smothered or stifled by outward circumstances; about how
... moretime stops for no one, marching us all forward into lives that maybe aren't what we expected or desired.I thoroughly enjoyed and admired Zweig's use of pacing, and the way the story leads us into the conundrum which his protagonist faces, which is ultimately a psychological rather than an interpersonal issue. less
