This was a hard topic to name, but this is about all books that are not ‘written’ novels! So graphic novels, comics, manga, audiobooks, etc. Shed some light on books in other forms.
- Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki
I can’t make a top anything list without including this manga series. Kaori Yuki’s art style is gorgeous, the story is amazing, and there isn’t a single character that you can’t, if not love, then have some kind of feelings for. I haven’t read this in years and I’m always telling myself to fix that. It’s always one of those series that I practically throw at people who show even the slightest amount of interest in trying out some manga reading. If any of you ever have a chance to read this, I highly recommend that you do so.
- Clover by CLAMP
It’s really hard to pick a series by CLAMP to include on this list. They’re an amazingly talented group of women and I love every piece of their work that I have read. Their art is beautiful and I think that’s one of the things that stand out the most in Clover. The art style in this series is a lot more simplified than usual, leaving a lot of negative space on each page. What this does is leave the reader a lot less overwhelmed to that they can truly appreciate the small bursts of beauty that they do give you. The story is interesting though unfinished. I never felt that it left you unsatisfied in the least though.
- Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
I don’t know if picture books are supposed to count but I’m including them anyway. This is one of my favorites to read to my daughter. It comes with a simple, colorless art style, cute and charming. The Mallard family is adorable and this book gets extra points for being set in Boston, my most favorite city. It’s also inspired by a true story which makes me giggle every time I think about it.
- Fox In Socks by Dr. Seuss
And since I’m including picture books in this list, how can I do so without including Dr. Suess? Fox in Socks can’t be considered my daughter’s favorite (I’m almost certain that she has her father reciting Red Fish Blue Fish in his sleep) but it is most certainly the most fun to read out loud. The answer to the question at the end of this book of tongue twisters is always a resounding YES, my tongue does feel numb now, thank you very much.
- Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa
This is a manga series that took me by surprise when I first read it. I never considered myself interested in fashion related anything and I’m so glad that I didn’t allow my snobby attitude stop me from finally picking this one up. Of course it’s about a lot more than just fashion. It was the first piece of fiction that I’d read featuring a transgender character. One of the main characters is bisexual. Pretty much all of the relationships are dysfunctional and even abusive but I don’t think that it’s romanticized and pretty much everyone is called out on their bullshit at some point. In short, it’s my favorite and I think it would be awesome if everyone reading this checked it out right now.
