For Halloween, Top Ten Tuesday’s decided to leave the topic open, as long as it relates to the holiday. I instantly had multiple ideas and couldn’t choose, so I’m going rogue!
Today and the next two Tuesdays I’m going Halloween crazy! Last year I talked about scary books on my TBR, so today I’m going to talk about more scary books I added to my TBR over the past year.
1 The Feast of the Goat – Mario Vargas Llosa
What’s scary about this book is the truth behind the narrative, as this is about the reign of dictator Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Along with a haunting story, I also like to learn more about historical events that are completely unknown to me.
2 From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death – Caitlin Doughty
I read Doughty’s first book a few years back and I’m ready to take another journey with her into the land of the dead. Doughty’s sophomore venture covers how different cultures take care of their dead. Perfect for this spooky season!
3 Hell House – Richard Matheson
From the author of I Am Legend comes the ‘Mount Everest of Haunted House books’ (according to Goodreads). To be honest, that’s all I need to know, because I love spooky houses.
4 Her Body and Other Parties – Carmen Maria Machado
This short story collection has been getting a lot of buzz, and the descriptions seem like something a weirdo like me would enjoy.
5 House of Leaves – Mark Z. Danielewski
Another spooky house story, this one centered around a family that figures out that their house is bigger on the inside (no, it’s not the Tardis… I don’t think). What lies in the dark corners of this house?
6 Lovecraft Country – Matt Ruff
Another book with some buzz, and now that Jordan Peele is going to adapt it into a HBO series, I really want to read the book!
7 Things to Do When You’re Goth in the Country – Chavisa Woods
Another collection of short stories that focuses on the darker side of boredom out in the backwoods. This was actually a recommendation after I talked about liking Things We Lost in the Fire, and it’s one I really want to read in the fall.
8 White is for Witching – Helen Oyeyemi
Another spooky story with a mysterious house! One where the house doesn’t seem to like that the mother of the Silver family has disappeared. I love Gothic tales, and this seems like a great throwback.
