review 1: This is an interesting take on a lot of the zombie tropes. What happens if, when the dead return, they're no different than they were before they died? Why should they want brains? Why can't they live like before? Well, there's something different about them, but what it is hasn't been expressed yet, just creating an unsettling tension in the one small town in Wisconsin where the dead have returned. This volume sets up the main characters, and explores the surface of the fascinating world it has built. There's a bit of action, and some grisly crimes, but for the most part, this book is just everyone battening down the hatches in preparation for worse that they all sense is going to come. A unique concept, interestingly told, with a lot of room for growth and continua... moretion.
review 2: Pretty run-of-the-mill artwork and often confusing plot. Didn't help that the 3 lead female characters looked pretty much the same. Plus, the narrative promises so many future developments that it doesn't quite manage to get off the ground. But it did make me curious enough that I'll try and read at least the next volume, although the thought that I have to reread the first one carefully if I want to be able to understand the second is kinda off-putting. less
