Mothers of Murdered Sons (MOMS), a local support group for grieving parents who have lost children to violence, is planning a vigil for slain 14-year-old Michael Israel Jones, who was fatally shot multiple times on Aug. 30 while walking in Maywood.
The vigil will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, 3 p.m., at the corner of 10th Ave. and Washington Blvd. in Maywood (the area where Jones was murdered).
Phyllis Duncan, the founder of MOMS, had held a vigil a few days after Jones was killed. She said earlier this month the vent was sparsely attended and wanted to organize another one. Duncan has also been canvassing Maywood, seeking information into Jones’ death.
“No we have not forgotten, and yes we do care,” Duncan wrote on a Facebook post announcing next weekend’s vigil.
“Join us as we give a community response to the family, friends and community that Michael’s life did matter,” Duncan wrote. “Bring a purple balloon and a prayer.”
