What’s on Your Nightstand? | August 2017

This is a monthly post that’s hosted by 5 Minutes for Books on the last Tuesday of each month. There are many ways you can do your monthly post depending on what your taste is, but it’s a great way to show others what you’re reading and find others with similar tastes to you. I’d recommend checking out their post about it.

What's On Your Nightstand?

What I’ve Finished Reading

Seeing as this is my first post for this blog, I’m going to just focus on what I’ve finished reading in August so far. Future posts I’ll focus on what I’ve finished reading since the previous post.

Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey | Finished 13 August

Set in a future where mankind is living in underground silos. There are many silos but each silo believes they’re the only one. Great book! I listened to the audio version and the lady who read it, Minnie Goode was fantastic.

The King of Sleep (The Watchers #2) by Caiseal Mór | Finished 14 August

The King of Sleep by Caiseal Mor

Hundreds of years ago in Scotland (I think that’s the gist) magic still existed, and the Watchers cause strife amongst the different kingdoms. Not a bad series, Caiseal is a friend of a friend so I thought I’d give these books a go, but to be honest I do find some of the characters a bit too irritating.

Blur (Night Roamers #1) by Kristen Middleton | Finished 15 August

Blur by Kristen Middleton

Are they or aren’t they vampires? A YA series that’s a very easy read, nothing complex going on there. If you’re an Anne Rice vampire lover then I probably wouldn’t choose this book, but if you want a quick and easy read this could do it.

Enchanted Secrets (Witches of Bayport #1) by Kristen Middleton

I got a random selection of Middleton’s books in one which is the only reason I’m reading another one – call it perseverance to check out an array of her writing! I didn’t really like this book, it’s about magical witches but just everything is way too convenient. Hungry? Snap your fingers there’s food. Want to lose weight? There’s a potion. OMG, seriously? Anyhoo, my recommendation is to give this a miss.

What I’m Currently Reading

I’m terrible, I read several books at once. Sometimes I love the variety and sometimes I think I overwhelm myself by having so much happening at once! But, at least for the most part, all of the books are on different mediums so have slightly different uses sometimes.

  • Shift Omnibus by Hugh Howey | Started 15 August | This is an audiobook and I tend to listen to this either when I am working out, cleaning the house or sometimes when I’m getting ready for work.
  • The Empire of Eternity by Anthony O’Neill | Started 15 August | This is a physical book which I tend to read in my spare time, and I also try to read a couple of pages before I go to sleep at night.
  • The Manhattan Diet by Eileen Daspin | Started 23 August | This is also a physical book, and I’m reading it as part of my “Miracle Morning”. I’m not sure if it really counts as a self-help book, but I’ll take it! Point being, I tend to read a couple of pages of this book first thing in the morning.
  • The Coin Collector by Kristen Middleton | Started 29 August | This is a book on my Kindle account which means it on my laptop so I might read it at work, and it’s also on my phone and so I might read it when I’m waiting for an appointment or at a cafe waiting for my takeaway lunch order to be filled.
What I’m Reading Next

I usually have some kind of an idea of what I’d like to read next…but then usually something happens and I change my mind! But for now, here’s the list I’m planning on.

  • Audiobook: Dust by Hugh Howey
  • Kindle: Zombie Games (Origins #1) by Kristen Middleton
  • Physical book: The Five Greatest Warriors by Matthew Reilly
  • Self-help book: Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own by Kate Bolick
What I’ve Added to my TBR
  • The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler
  • Burn the Dead: Quarantine (#1) by Steven Jenkins
  • Sand Omnibus by Hugh Howey
  • Shiver (Night Roamers #2) by Kristen Middleton
  • Vengeance (Night Roamers #3) by Kristen Middleton
  • Illusions (Night Roamers #4) by Kristen Middleton
  • Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
  • Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
  • The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss
  • 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam
  • Your Best Year by Lisa Jacobs
  • Marketing Playbook: Scale Your Online Business to Outrageous Success by Lisa Jacobs
  • What is Veiling? by Sahar Amer

Yes, I’m aware that I tend to add more to my TBR each month than I can actually read! I feel sometimes like I need to take a gap year, not for holidays, but so that I can read a whole lot of books!

So, what’s been on your nightstand this month?

Until next time!

Jaslyn xx
