12.18.2017 – Old Testament: Jon 2.4
To read the Bible in a year, read Jonah on December 18, In the year of our Lord 2017
By Don Ruhl
Jonah knew that he had attempted to flee the Lord, not wanting to go to Nineveh and preach and prophesy there. The Lord sent a storm against the ship that Jonah had entered and he had told the mariners on board to throw him over and then the storm would stop, for Jonah knew why the storm had come. The Lord sent a great fish to swallow Jonah and eventually the prophet prayed to God from the belly of the fish, saying in part,
Then I said, “I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.”
(Jonah 2.4)
Jonah knew that he had been cast out, but he also knew that he could return to the Lord. Therefore, the prophet prayed to the Lord, seeking His mercy that He might receive the prophet and release him from the fish. The Lord did so, but He still expected Jonah to carry out the original command.
