review 1: This is an extraordinarily useful work for anyone seeking to study the Bible in a way that is consistent with its own internal structure. Gentry and Wellum lay a strong foundation of in-depth biblical-theological analysis of the covenants in order to show how they function as the "backbone" of the biblical narrative, examining each individually, in relation to one another, and in the context of the entire canon. As a result of this faithful exegesis, they are able to draw out important theological implications for the church, demonstrating weaknesses in both dispensational and traditional covenant approaches and showing how appreciation of the multifaceted theme of "kingdom through covenant" is essential for understanding how the redemptive purposes of God as recorded in S... morecripture find fulfillment in the person and work of Christ. Though I would caution that Gentry's exegesis is scholarly and at times highly technical, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough for anyone who is serious about studying the Bible.
review 2: Are God’s promises to His people unconditional or typological? To answer that, Wellum and Gentry offer this massive look at biblical covenants. Wellum bookends the tome with comments about their proposed framework, highlighting how it differs from both covenantal and dispensational interpretations. Gentry fills in the middle with a (very) thorough examination of biblical texts relating to covenants. Far from a quick read, and repetitive at times, yet largely convincing and certainly worthy of deep rumination. less
