review 1: This is a collection of three short novels, and is a bit of a trip. Inspired by the feeling of schlock cinema, it starts with a somewhat traditional horror scenario, then starts to veer more and more into the bizarre and surreal.While we follow the same narrator through the three tales, there does seem to be a bit of inconsistency of tone -- especially when it comes to the third novel, which was written quite a number of years after the first two. The concluding tale tries to find some kind of explanation behind something that is, at its core, inexplicable.Despite the muddled mess that we have in the closing chapters of the series, this was an enjoyable read. Recommended for people who like bizarre, surreal fiction.
review 2: This rating is just for book 1, whi... morech I read for a book club. Lansdale is a skilled writer, to be sure, and if you love gruesome satire this will be right up your alley. The story is grim and bizarre with some very black, dry humor thrown in. If you're looking for a laugh-fest this won't give you one; rather, it's pretty gory & gross (there's a lot of cannibalism, murder, and bad hygiene). The dialog felt stylized and too conscious, but not having read Lansdale's other works I don't know if that's his style, or if he intentionally made the dialog sound like dialog straight out of a B movie. If it's the latter, then kudos to him for adding another layer to this grim satire. I may get around to reading the other stories, and I can see why this a cult hit, but I could only recommend this book to readers with a very specific taste. And don't hope for a warm, redemptive ending. less
