YA Book Review: Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

Hiya everyone, it’s Sarah!

I have unofficially determined that the month of December will now and forever be used to clean up the TBR shelf. I currently have 340 books on my TBR shelf, with several dating back to 2012. While I have had many strike outs with these old books, which just couldn’t hold up to the test of time, I loved Akata Witch. I also just looked into it and the second book in this series was recently published in October…score!

Summary:

Even though Sunny was born in America, her family is from Nigeria and she has lived in this country for much of her life. There were many areas where Sunny did not fit in with her life, she is a girl, she has one foot between two cultures, and she is an albino child living in Africa (which means the sun burns her quickly). While others may look at Sunny differently, she is smart, a great soccer player, and hiding a magical secret. Sunny is part of the Leopard people, something she only just discovered. She can access magical juju and those more experienced around her are teaching her how, though she cannot tell anyone outside of the Leopard community (even her family). While Sunny and her new friends are learning, there is a local serial killer murdering children. Sunny and her friends may be the only ones who can stop this evil.

Review:

I enjoyed this novel. The story was fast-paced. Sunny and her friends were witty and funny.  I thought that it was a fresh setting for a fantasy novel and unique from the recent Beasts Made of Night. This book will appeal to both teens and tweens. I am interested to uncover more of Sunny’s secrets and story.
