review 1: This is a book that made me travel to France to see the Impressionists' paintings. Besides the love story between Claude and Camille, the author shows us the urgency and drive behind Monet. Until the end of his life he continued to search for the perfect light, the light to capture on canvas. Cowell also weaves in the friends that influenced Monet: Renoir, Sisley, Bazille, and Pissaro who struggle together. Their lives are full of disappointments until finally accepted in the French art salons. The book is an easy read even if you don't like history.
review 2: Cowell kept me turning pages late into the night. My grandfather is from Le Havre, and my great grandparents should have purchased some of Monet's caricatures. Oh, well. I liked this book as an introdu
... morection to a famous painter and his colleagues. I will read more, and I will recommend this to my nieces and nephews. I would have preferred a little less sex and a little more insight into the times, but I'm not the author! less
