review 1: Goldstein really brings ideas to life, although the debate on the existence of God went on a little long. Sat next to Rebecca at dinner a couple of weeks ago and she confirmed that she came to fiction with no background in craft. It shows. There's not much flesh on these characters. Very dialogue heavy. One ticthat especially bothered me: every flashback is fully in-scene, which makes it difficult to tell where you are in time; some judicious use of summary would help. But the clever, often laugh-out-loud funny commentary on intellectual culture, the manic pace, and the best fictional titles I've ever encountered make it worth reading.
review 2: An academic novel? Somehow it basically works. A few places dragged a bit but the author does a good job of explainin
... moreg some difficult concepts. It ends up feeling a little bit like Sophie's World for atheists. The main character (a sort of guileless default atheist humanities guy) was sympathetic for me, but I was disappointed by most of the "believing" characters. One turns out to be a total buffoon and another is rather shark-like (apologies to shark-lovers). The Appendix summarizes and attempts to refute 36 arguments for God's existence. This last bit is very much a mixed bag, but worth reading if you're into that sort of thing. less
