review 1: I suspected I would like these short stories based on advance reviews and key themes and settings (I am a sucker for a campus location), but what I wasn't prepared for was the range here and the sense of history: about half the stories here were set in the near-distant past and/ or in parts of the world in which people from different places get to know each other. So apart from being an absolute pleasure to read (Rebecca Lee is funny) these stories were also genuinely illuminating of the human condition. Highly recommended.
review 2: Every single story in this collection takes place either at a dinner party among writers or on a college campus. There are several different descriptions of "the quad" in various weather. Rebecca Lee can obviously write well, and I... more'm reminded of Ray Bradbury's response to people who didn't like the overwhelming white male population of his novels, which was something along the lines of: I can only write from my perspective, and instead of criticizing my version of realty, go to work making your own reality. That said, there are plenty of people who can also write pretty well, and-- for me and only for me-- these characters and their lives were cloistered and tepid. I'm not asking for car chases and explosions; I just feel uncomfortable on college campuses and at dinner parties. That's not to say this isn't well-written, or that you might very well enjoy these stories-- they, have to their credit, some fantastic sentences, and Lee seems to be an author ignited by other writers and ideas-- but I-- and I'm just talking about me-- kept wondering about the world outside the campus, the lives beyond the dinner party. less
