review 1: Enjoyed this shorter middle grade novel in the car. It was creative and well done with strong characters and Stead's typical skill at setting and mood. I was a little thrown by the twist at the end but enjoyed the build up and tension as it came together. Georges (silent S) is a character with a great voice and stead captures the varying emotions and reactions of this age. She also mixes in middle school interactions and life in the city.
review 2: oh my god this is such a spectacular book. it really teaches you about friendship and family. ok well in this story, Georges, the main character, has just moved into a new apartment since his dad lost his job. as they are getting their stuff unloaded, there's this sheet of paper that says spy club, so Georges atten
... moreds it and meets Safer and Candy, yeah they are names, weird right? so their mission is to find out what a strange dude carries in his suitcase. the strange dude is always wearing black, he never talks, and people always come in but never come out of his apartment, and he always carries around a black big suitcase. Safer makes Georges do stupid and dangerous stuff to help find out what the dude is hiding. then Safer gets caught lying. there is no dangerous dude that carries bodies in his suitcase. it was just a lie, but to Safer, it was a test. they get in a fight but later make up and yeah that's just the main stuff. but there are a bunch of other details, like the parrots they watch, the fact that Safer and Candy don't go to school, the fact that Georges is getting bullies in school, his mother being sick, and so much of other stuff. less
