review 1: I received this book off of Goodreads First Reads and was very excited to be a winner. As soon as I got it, I couldn't wait to read it since it had caught my interest greatly. This book was even better then I had anticipated. It was very well written and incredibly interesting, holding onto my attention from start to finish. It left me hungry and craving for more when I did finish it. It was a very, very good read and I highly recommend it!
review 2: I really enjoyed this novel! The main character, Dr. Gabriella Mondini, stands out from her contemporaries as the only female physician in Venice in the late 16th century; our protagonist and the other central characters are highly believable, on the whole, and interesting to encounter among the pages of this book.
... more The plot kept my interest as well: Gabriella decides she must find her father, also a doctor, who left Venice a decade ago to roam Europe to research diseases for an encyclopedia of maladies he was attempting to compile. Her father's letters have become less frequent and less coherent, so she and two servants set off across Europe on a fascinating adventure, a sort of 16th century road trip. I enjoyed reading it, and I'd recommend it if you're interested in Europe or adventure stories. less
