review 1: This one was a little blah for me. I was expecting a little " War of the Roses" type of story but this book was more emotional and sweet in a way. I understand the wife's need to be her own person after being married to a controlling, older man but the story came across a tad childish and was lacking that punch I always look for when I read a book. I just felt like there was never a moment that brought the whole story together. It almost felt like these two characters who were married for ten years were complete strangers who knew nothing about one another and that caused the story to fall apart in my mind.
review 2: I had this book on my list for a bit and for some unknown reason, I thought it would be a book with non-con BDSM. Obviously, I didn't read the bl
... moreurb recently. I kept hoping for the spankings, restraints, etc and it never happened. Reviewing the blurb, now I know why.You know you read too much BDSM when the word "unwilling" immediately means non-con and gets you excited. *sigh*This is a well written story. When the passion dies in a marriage, frequently it ends in a dissolution. In this marriage, passion is still strong. What is no longer working is the partnership, or lack thereof. Gina is basically experiencing a mid-life crisis. She's lived in the shadow of her PhD physicist husband, David, for so long. This is not an issue if one is happy to be this way and to be a supportive wife with no career of her own. For Gina, it doesn't work. A few life changing events have her reviewing her life to date and deciding she can't continue on.This is a thought provoking issue which hits home to many women. When it was acceptable to be the little woman, this type of quandary was perhaps kept more "hush hush". With women working in the workforce in more than a service capacity through janitorial services, food services and secretarial, I find this kind of questioning becomes more prevalent.Ms. Roszel does a good job of showing the way Gina is torn. She loves her husband but he is smothering her and the fear of disappearing is all to real. Gina's fears are valid and it's difficult for David because it's not something his father's generation had to deal with as much. Both David and Gina make mistakes as they try to adjust to Gina's desire for change. It's painful to watch a marriage collapsing as one who views it as a prison and the other sees it as a peaceful oasis. The conflict in the story is well written. The actions of both Gina and David are hilarious at times. Other times, it may cause the reader to wince. The flow of the story is well done and the resolution is a happily for now. This is realistic and enjoyable. I wouldn't say this is a favourite book of mine or one I would remember 5 years from now. I will say this is a well written and thoughtful look at a contemporary issue. Recommended for contemporary romance readers who want to see how a marriage can be saved. less
