review 1: I love the Primal Instinct series, and yet for some reason I put off reading this one. Maybe it was because I know the series is drawing to a close, maybe it just got lost in the mountain my TBR pile has grown into. I don't know, but when I finally did sit down to read it, I was so glad I did.Touch of Temptation is Kellan's turn...wild, sexy Kellan. He has been portrayed in the past books as a bit of a screw up and playboy - well meaning, but easily sidetracked by by a pair of, um, legs. But his wild ways caught up with him when he found out he was sleeping with the enemy...literally, and nearly cost everyone he loves their lives. That wake up call was a hard one to take, and Kell has been carrying around more than his fair share of guilt and self disgust. It is at thi... mores low point in his life than Kell catches his first glance of Chloe. It is only a picture her sister Olivia has, but it is enough to capture Kell's complete attention. But Chloe is a half witch, half Merrick prisoner being held in the stronghold of their enemy, destined to be tortured and killed in the most vile of ways. So, perpetual screw-up Kell sets in motion a plan to rescue Chloe, and redeem himself in the process, knowing full well it is more than likely a suicide mission. First of all, I loved Kell. Loved him. When it counts, he is as alpha as they come. he is far harder on himself than anyone else could ever be, but there is no self pity to it. He just took a good, hard look at himself and didn't like what he saw, so he did whatever he had to do to be able to live with himself again. His need to free Chloe goes much deeper than that, deeper than even he knew until he finally saw her in person. The thing was, I never saw him as as much of a screw-up as he saw himself, so I found that he was way too hard on himself. And I wasn't prepared to like Chloe as much as I did, either. I am usually very picky about heroines, since they tend to grate on my nerves, but Chloe didn't. She was no superhero, but she was strong in her own way, and accepting of Kellan as he was. It is only through her acceptance of him that Kell learns to accept himself. Now, I should warn people that this one is hot. HOT. It is so great to get a book that manages to be sexy while still having a plot. This one does, for sure. And, the uber-horrible raping and murdering bad guys are less...active...here, which is a bonus. The Cassus take the cake for being the worst, most vicious and depraved villains ever. They haven't become all soft and cuddly, they are still menacing, but the scenes that bothered some readers before are absent here. Almost all of this book is spent in the barren Wasteland, and pretty much all of the previous players make a return appearance. There is a set up for the next book, between the fragile Raine and the former collective soldier Seth. When I heard their story was next, I wasn't sure how Raine could find her way to Seth, how they could overcome both of their pasts. However, their few scenes made me see that there are definite possibilities. Noah is up after Seth, and I do so hope that Sienna isn't his mate...or if she is, she definitely needs a character overhaul. The few glimpses we had of her just didn't quite do it for me.After book eight, there will be a spin-off series, featuring the very hot vampires we have met in the recent couple of books. Ashe and Juliana, Gideon, Micah, and new character Gabby hopefully will get their turns to shine. And while I am sad to be counting down to the end of Primal Instincts, I am looking forward to the vamps turn. Rhyannon Byrd can always be counted on for a great story.
review 2: Acomplicated story that is a continuation of situations and circumstances begun in the previous five books. Kellon Scott was introduced in book one but only now comes into his own. He has finally matured and is determined to rescue Chloe Harcourt, a young beautiful witch who has been taken prisoner by a sadistic warmonger bent on power grabbing and needs her unique abilities. A really great love story at the core but lots of suspense and action swirling and fomenting around the main characters. Ryannon Byrd is an experienced writer and once again demonstrates that she can put together one heck of a story. less
