review 1: Set in Kenya, it's a detective story with some Kenyan history and insight into the ethnic turmoil in the country. A prostitute is found dead right before the upcoming elections. When wealthy politicos are involved the police want to shove the death under the rug, but Detective Mollel won't let it go. What brings this novel out of the usual detective fiction is its location but also the complexity of the characters. Mollel is a father who basically neglects his son because of his focus on justice. His wife has died in a bombing.
review 2: Better than I was expecting from the first couple chapters. Essentially it's a crime novel set in a background of political corruption and civil unrest. Not something I necessarily would have picked up myself but was a good pie
... morece of crime fiction - red herrings, characters that you grow to care about, twists and turns and with it all the very distinct possibility that a lot of these characters that you like and admire might not make it through. Took me perhaps a third of the book to really get into it, but was a fast read once I was hooked into the story. Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 so I've gone with the better rating less

Interesting reading about the setting in Kenya but the detective/who done it is completely formulaic
