review 1: this book was a piece of literary trash, it was like richard harland got two books analysed both plots mashed them together and added a change to history which made the modern day victorian. the book would be okay and possibly bareable to read for the average young adult steampunk alternate history book reader. my rating was very clear once it started talking about col going to school, if your'e considering reading this book definitely 100% borrow it from a library it wont be worth your money to buy it-1/5
review 2: WORLDSHAKER was a lot of fun–constant action, constant intrigue. My only qualms with the book were the oversimplifications–not just with the plot, but with the setting and the characters.I felt like Harland only skimmed the emotional surface of
... morethe plot, rather than sinking into it. Our hero, Col, never quite reacted to the situations he was in wholly. There’s one scene in particular in which someone who has always been close to him is killed, and he rationalizes the murder with an “oh-well-he/she-deserved-it-I-guess” moralistic internal argument. It just didn’t ring true to me.Nothing in the novel was ever wildly unbelievable–in the framework of the novel, of course–but I wanted more emotional commitment from the characters. I felt a little like I could see Harland behind the curtain, curtailing the emotion so as to get on with the plot.Overall: 3 out of 5 stars less
