review 1: The first 3/4 of the book gets 4.5 stars. At that point, it was a truly intriguing book that I didn't want to put down. The last 1/4 gets practically no stars. I'm a happy ending type of person. In my readings I prefer the loose ends to be tied off and an actual resolution to occur. This book seemed to just give up on telling the story. Also, I was not a fan of his writing style. Although Matheson did write very well, he had these annoying interjections into the story that kept interrupting the plot. Such as, every time three words in a row started with the same letter, he felt the need to discuss the occurrence in parenthesis, very weird.
review 2: The reader of this book was skilled, feeling very natural, partially because of the (often obnoxiously so) first
... moreperson. I love Matheson, but this novel was a banal exercise for the author in an attempt to write a "modern" fantasy tale that delves into horror at moments. The horror is horrific. But overall, the novel is a mess of scattered memories of an 80 year old author who reminds us of his age every other page. Also this unreliable narrator has a penchant for pointing out his affinity for alliteration ("Ha. Another one."). It gets old swiftly. It is a sexually charged tale of a WWI vet who moves to a hidden town England and becomes sexually entrapped by both a witch and a fairy and the joys and problems therein. Mixed with the unreliable author it often becomes an insufferable read. I made it to the end, but there are much better works by the famed writer of the Twilight Zone. less

Un roman magnifique ! Qui se lit aisément, c'est envoûtant.

A simple yet adult fairy tale. I'm glad I found this one.
