review 1: Richard Stengel introduces his readers to Mandela as he seen him during their three year long association. A simple and well written account of Mandela's political struggle, the influence he carried from his prolonged imprisonment, and the transformation he underwent during his jail days sufficiently helps to come to know the person Richard Stengel has presented as a living legend. The book is a reflection of its author's masterly skills as a writer, observer, researcher, and a true professional as he sufficiently tries to balance his take on Mandela, presenting his shortcomings side by side Mandela's leadership qualities and his human values and how he made it possible to help create a new South Africa at the end of apartheid. Though the book is about the principles and p... moreersonal strategies cherished by Mandela, it is also a brief historic account of an important era, introducing democracy in SA at the culmination of the official policy of racial segregation.
review 2: This was an enjoyable read and insight into the person behind the legend. I felt as though I was meeting Mandela myself. There are some inaccurate reporting inside the history of Mandela the editors need to correct. Mandela NEVER gave a guilty as charged within the Treason Trial. You must note the South African Regime had accumulated all the outstanding cases into the Rivonia Trail and charged him as a treason and terrorist. To that Mandela from the doc stated NOT GUILTY. Instead he made the South African Government Regime guilty of the charges and He admitted to being a Freedom Fighter and humanitarian on the side of the people to disobey any laws that oppress and are crimes against humanity. Despite this major error, it was a fine journal. less
