review 1: I lOVED this book! From the very first chapter, Medicine Walk was a book that I could not put down. Although the story is not an uplifting one, it certainly is well-written and Wagamese's writing style will appeal to a broad audience. The premise was an interesting one and is what kept me reading well into the night. Eldon's demons are slowly revealed and Franklin comes to an understanding of just how unfair life can be...for him and his father. This book is so much more than just a "summer read". It stays with you, evolving into something more than just words on a page and perhaps making each one of us examine our own demons.
review 2: Medicine Walk is brutally honest about how life can be just too big for us. At several points in the book the main character
... more's father replies to his son that he simply couldn't muster against the tide of mainstream culture. Story after story have the father failing himself as well as others. He is afraid of the repercussions of truth. The latter sentiment seems a universal challenge, but when mainstream culture expects you to fail is that a fair burden to add? Fair or not the main character seems not afraid to speak truth to mainstream culture. Other students at school, his teachers, his own father hear his raw and unsoftened responses. Is it this young man's commune with nature that gives his the clarity and the will to walk his own path, to communicate with the ghosts of his people and regain a sense of dignity his father does not possess. Regardless the experiences we gain when we take the medicine walk with Richard Wagamese are unforgettable. Encounters of bear, strong healing woman and gritty poverty are as unsettling as they are peaceful. Another great read by Wagamese and a hopeful telling for all of us who want to keep telling the truth. less
