review 1: As a introductory primer to mindfulness and practical aspects of Buddhism, this is not a bad book. Where it falls down and in some way failed on it's promise was in the "science" aspect. Despite frequent citations, it was exceptionally light on concrete conclusions, often offering such statements as "Singleness of mind is probably supported by fast gamma wave synchronization..." Neuroscience is a newer field, and I recognize that perhaps the research isn't there yet, but the weak statements turned me off. Additionally, a lot of the book is made up of written guided meditation exercises, which I found difficult to follow - reading the exercise seemed to defeat the purpose for me. Putting all that aside, it was an interesting book and put together some interesting ideas... more regarding consciousness and the brain. I also enjoyed the appendix containing nutritional supplements for different brain functions.
