review 1: Ten-year old Dustin is trying to make sense out of the fact that his grandfather, who has raised him since his mother died, has been thrown in jail for breaking a new Oklahoma law against harboring illegal aliens. He has moved in with his Aunt Sweet, who not only has to work on getting her father out of jail, but has to come to terms with the facts that her son is a bully, her husband is on the opposite side of the political fence, and her niece (and Dustin's sister) is married to a Mexican who is in the country illegally. Then Dustin goes missing, her father refuses on moral grounds to fight his incarceration, her niece's husband asks for sanctuary in a local church, and the town sheriff, the state representative, the media, and the local townspeople come to a giant stan... moredoff. This is a heartwarming and often hilarious story, but Askew doesn't hesitate to address the complex political and moral issues that arise.
review 2: An Oklahoma small town and family are torn apart by the arrest of their beloved Grandfather and the subsequent deporting of many Mexican nationals. In the midst of the chaos, young Dusty Brown goes missing. His Aunt Sweet finds her world and marriage swirling like a tornado, as the whole town must come to grips with their own hypocrisy, prejudice and ignorance of the plight of others. Excellent characterization, setting and narrative. less
