review 1: Fascinating insight into the realities of a young woman of color trying to rise to stardom in 1950s Hollywood. Candid, lyrical and detailed, Rita Moreno describes the turmoil of leaving her home country, Puerto Rico, and adjusting to life in New York. So many interesting observations into the subtleties and nuance of racism, sexism and ageism of the time. Moreno is not one to sweep her own mistakes under the rug, and openly shares of her struggles with insecurity, unhealthy romantic relationships and suicide. VERY interesting!!!
review 2: One of those memoirs that reads exactly as if the subject were sitting there with you telling you their stories themselves. When that person is Rita Moreno, you know the experience will be immensely entertaining. Lots of emo
... moretional honesty here particular regarding romantic and family relationships. I would have like a bit more show biz dirt but that's just me. I remain a big fan. I'd love to meet her one day and this book makes me feel like I have. less
