review 1: My kids enjoyed Julian's story as much as the original "Wonder" and it brought up lots of opportunities to discuss "why kids do the things they do". One small spoiler alert - in the end you learn about a boy that goes to the concentration camps in Nazi WW2- my 7 year old did not know anything about the holocaust- other than basics about hitler and types of airplanes - so that opened a world to him- especially having a mom that uses a wheelchair- that someone would kill a person for having a disability- was a pretty big thought for him- and that led to him wanting to know a lot more about WW2. I think these are important things to teach kids about- but based on the first book- I wasn't expecting (my bad i should have preread) BUT knowing your own child's maturity- you might... more want to pre- read before reading aloud to younger kids - as the ending is pretty heavy.
review 2: This is the second time I read Wonder, and the book included the Julian chapter.I didn't miss Julian's point of view in the initial publication, as he was a perfect foil and ultimately the character who drove the story. I was easily able to imagine, on my own, that he would one day grow up and regret his tween actions- no need for an explanation. While I did find the parts about Julian's parents to add something, the end chapters, involving his grandmother were trite. A reveal about a secret family holocaust story was unbelievable and forced. It is possible to have a child learn a lesson about empathy and kindness without making it another holocaust story.Wonder is such a lovely perfect novel, sometimes, ends are best left loose and hanging. less

If you loved 'Wonder', you should definitely read 'The Julian Chapter'. Basically, it clears up why Julian was such an asshole to Auggie while at Beecher Prep (although in my mind, Julian was still an asshole). It made Julian seem more like a human and less like a bully. And if you're wondering why he was kind of an asshole (although there was a reasoning to it), you just have to look to his parents.Loved when Julian visited his Grandmere and found out more about her childhood. Definitely my favorite part.Short and sweet. Great writing once again from Palacios.

Boy, did I hate Julian going into this novella. I'm sure everyone who read Wonder felt the same way. I also knew there might be a good reason for Julian acting they way he did. And his mom, what a bitch!! Fear can make people do horrible things. Which is no excuse, of course. I understand why Palacio kept this chapter separate from the book. She wanted you to feel the way you feel about Julian so that you can go into this chapter with this hatred. Smart move. I loved Julian's grandmother!!
