review 1: This is a follow up story to the book Wonder. Julian the bully of August Pullman tells his side of the story. When Julian and his parents are finally confronted with threatening notes that directly connects him the bullying no one wants to owe up to it. He and his parents are having a difficult time accepting the consequences of Julian bullying August all year long. Instead of taking the responsibility for his actions he and his parents blame everything but Julian. They try to blame August for causing Julian's anxiety and night terrors. Needless to say Julian is suspended for turning most of the class against Summer, Jack and August. This means no Nature Trip, he needs to write a letter of apology to August, and he isn't invited to attend Beecher Prep Academy next year. A ... moresummer trip to Paris to visit his grand mere helps Julian put things into proper perspective. After she relates her experiences from her childhood during Nazi occupied France, Julian apologizes and accepts responsibility for his actions. This is an interesting perspective, after denying any part in the school situation Julian is resigned to realize that a fresh start is a good thing. I recommend this to be read to accompany the book Wonder. It's well written and the comparison of bullying, as it compares to the terror the Nazi soldiers inflicted on Jews and those that were in-firmed is very good. It leaves room for some good discussion.
review 2: 4.75 stars. ***Spoilers ahead***I'm glad the author included Julian's pov. I understood where he was coming from a little more. His attitude, in a way, was a product of his home life. His mother enabled his behavior. I took away .5 because his mother got on my nerves. I liked Julian's grandmother. Her story was extremely moving and made me tear up. Im glad Julian apologized to Auggie for being so hateful. Im glad that he and his family felt remorse. Oh, and Im glad I got to hear from Auggie again, he is such a forgiving child. I would love to read more adventures with Auggie, Jack and Summer. :-) less
