review 1: This book appears at first to be NOT sexist. Overtime, it reveals itself to be super sexist. The female character is only a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER on the surface but she doesn't DO anything other than have sex with a centaur and the leader of the revolution. Boris, one of the male lead characters is a creepy rapist. The other main character Max, is bland and the alleged devotion of his revolutionary followers is not believable. He has the charisma of a slug. He is also still in love with some foreign girl who washed to shore when he was a child. Depth of a slug.
review 2: Hmmmmm just finished this book today and although the cover was very pretty and intriguing I am sad to say that I don't really have any other compliments. This book was very choppy and changy
... more in it's style and ultimately quite flat in terms of it's plot. Telling the story of a city, Caeli-Amur, that is being ruled by three constantly ruling houses (who themselves are ruled by a higher form of power??), the next key idea involved is simply lots and lots of plotting, deaths, talking and more deaths. It took a little while to get into as it dived straight into Kata sexually luring a minotaur to his death, and even though the story sprang a few twists and turns quite well, I was never really taken on a journey... anywhere. To be honest, now that I am trying to write this review I am not even too sure what the main details to the story are as there just seems to be lots of very minor happenings all jumbled together. The ideas seemed a bit random with the inclusion of Minotaurs not really making sense at all and the later shared body relationship of god Aya and Max was completely odd. The sentences were easy to read but hard to really absorb as they didn't really have anything to speak about. I don't think ultimately I got anything out of this book even though I continued all the way to the end where it slowly picked up a little pace but not much. I think the concept of the sunken library containing vital information as to how to control all the forces of magic was one that if well executed could really have lead the story places. The other concept I reasonably enjoyed was that of Officiate Autec and his rise to power. Although I see many other readers seem to have really enjoyed the originality of this book, I don't think it would be something I would outright recommend. I am not disuaded to try this author again however for I think with a bit more unity and reworking his ideas could be moulded into something beautiful. less
