review 1: A pretty good standalone contemporary romance. This book was interesting and had great characters but didn't really capture me the way R. L. Ryal's Redemption series did. I loved River and Haven and their sweet love story that defied expectations and crossed class boundaries. I also really liked the themes in the book about appearances and public image being deceiving. Even though River appeared to have the perfect life from the outside he was more lost and alone than Haven was in her nearly destitute impoverished lifestyle. I also liked the fact that both Haven and River weren't perfect but ended up being perfect for each other. The story was well-written and made for a good quick read but as I said didn't really capture me. I'd recommend reading this if you're looking fo... morer a quick standalone contemporary romance read and like the author's work. Otherwise I'd recommend looking at R. K. Ryal's paranormal series - I've only read the Redemption series so far but I greatly enjoyed it and am planning to read her other one too.
review 2: I hands down fell in love with “The Singing River” from the very first chapter. The flow of the authors writing just has a way of grabbing you into the story and not letting go. The characters, and the development of their roles in the book are amazing. You will feel the emotions from the characters as if they were your own. If you get a chance to read this book, you will feel sadness, loss, hope, and happiness. I laughed and cried while reading this book, so prepare yourself for a very touching novel that will take you places you never thought possible. I highly recommend this book to any and all readers. I would love to go into detail, but I feel as if I would be doing you wrong. Get your hands on a copy and read this book! If you have doubts, just trust me, you have my word! Here is what R.K. Ryals said to me about her life and her love for writing:"When I was growing up, my family was extremely poor. Because of this, we didn't have television or many toys. My mother took my sister and I to our local library when I was about five years old, and it opened up a whole new world for me. I already had a genuine love for storytelling. My grandmother was a British war bride who came to America at nineteen after World War II, and she loved to tell stories. She would rock in her red recliner, drinking hot tea, and crocheting while spinning tales. Most of them were true stories, but she had a way with words that made them come alive. I had a growing respect for storytelling that transferred to paper. I honestly can't remember a time when I haven't written. I've never wanted to do anything else. For me, writing is breathing, it is living, it is being. It's about writing worlds and characters with problems and helping them overcome them in remarkable and sometimes surprising ways. I write because my stories speak to me, because writing has a way of healing that nothing else does. It has carried me throughout my life, and has been an outlet when I needed it most. I feel the same about music. I don't play music, but I do write to music. For me, it is inspiring.Outside of writing to music, I don't have a particular process or method I use when writing. I honestly let the story and emotion guide me. I do a lot of research before I write, but I don't outline my stories. I usually have a general idea of where I'm going, but I don't develop the entire story ahead of time. I like surprises. I truly love to see where a story will take me, and they often take me on amazing journeys.I am a writer, a reader, and a survivor. I think we all have things in our lives that teach us about endurance, and I use that in my writing. For me, it was losing a parent young and fighting an eating disorder. Life gives us obstacles. I think who we are and what we become is what we make of those obstacles. How we deal with them. I read a quote once that said, "Writing is dreaming on paper." There is no truer statement. Words carry me away to a place where I am different, where I can dream and spin those dreams into books. It is the best job in the world."I really hope you all get a chance to read “The Singing River” or any of R.K. Ryals’ books! Here is some more info on the author before you go:R. K. Ryals is a scatterbrained mother of three whose passion is reading whatever she can get her hands on. She makes her home in Mississippi with her husband, three daughters, a Shitzsu named Tinkerbell, and a coffeepot she couldn't live without. less
