Mr. Terupt
review 1: For me personally I rate the book a 4. For my students, I rate it a 3. First, let me say that while I didn't think it was quite as good as the first (which I loved), I did enjoy this one. I felt the focus shifted a little more to the students and less on Mr. Terupt, yet he was still there guiding and helping them. The character development was naturally and it was nice seeing the characters rise past their challenges. Yes, all of the ends were nicely tied up and all was happy, but it is a kids' book and not everything has to be tragic. Concerning students... Let me first state, this is NOT read aloud material. The first one (Because of Mr. Terupt) was, but this one is NOT. There are several references to girls getting their periods-- and not just the mention by name but de... morescription "blood in her underwear"-- and a girl stuffing her bra with toilet paper. It just all felt a little too "Judy Bloom", and the ironic thing is, the author even references her books a few time. It's also a little awkward that the boys talked about these things from their perspective. This "puberty talk" really narrowed the audience of this book to girls. That's disappointing because the first one was for girls and boys. Towards the end there were some romances that sprang up between the students-- hand holding and kissing-- and it just felt forced and not really age appropriate. It's like this book was written for an older audience than the first one, which is odd since it's a series. The other thing is that in the story Lexi starts hanging out with older kids who smoke and drink. She gives into peer pressure to smoke. Some other reviews say that it's totally inappropriate for this age group, but I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing to weave in some lessons in novels. It was handled well, and not glorified. It was viewed as a mistake. Again though, it just didn't seem to match the progression of the kids-- seemed like those things would happen more than just a year after the first book. While I enjoyed it, I will be selective when recommending it to students. It's disappointing that it's not as accessible and age-appropriate as the first one.
review 2: This was a wonderful sequel to "Because of Mr. Terupt." It was filled with ups and downs, but the best part was how Peter, Jeffrey, Luke, Anna, Danielle, Jessica, and Alexia created a close friendship, which they used to overcome the obstacles in their unpredictable lives. Peter's parents wan him to go to a special private school, but he wants to stay with his friends at their school. Alexia is eager to grow up, and she starts hanging out with some high school kids, which starts problems. Jeffrey's family finally starts to act like an actual family after his brother's death, which is great news. Danielle thinks that her family is keeping a secret from her after they see a man walking in their farm land fields, and she is determined to find out what it is. Luke's sharp observations lead to surprising answers and conclusions. Anna finds out the truth about her father. And Jessica uncovers her teacher's past. Mr. Terupt makes their sixth grade year a blast, which they will never forget. And he teaches them that life isn't always fair, but everything happens for a reason. less
