review 1: I enjoyed this book less than the previous two in the series, although it did keep my interest all the way through. It starts off with a pretty gruesome description of an old torture, and that sets the tone for the rest of the novel. I did like the introduction of the character of Crowbone, and I expect we'll see a lot more of him as the series progresses. One thing that's a little odd about this series is that these Vikings don't seem to do an awful lot of Viking-like things. They spend more time on land chasing legends than they do pillaging coastal settlements. I wonder if that will change in the next one.

... morelly quite minimal when it comes to that stuff. There are no long, tedious descriptions of clothes and homes and furniture. But what he excels at are getting you in the mindset of the peoples. A snowstorm is not just a snowstorm: to the vikings in the book it really is Odin's white raven shaking his wings. These people are superstitious by our definition. By theirs they are alive to the universe. They live in nature and the world that make our own look narrow and myopic. To be in this book is to live with the myths on a daily basis.
