review 1: Super, super, super.
review 2: Before I talk about this book I must mention that I admire the author and his publicist for the way they treat fans. I have been to a fair few signings in my time, and I am pleased that my son likes to go and meet his favourite authors too. I took my son and a friend of his to one of the Cherub series book signings, a lovely young lady walked up and down the signing queue giving out Cherub badges for free. This impressed me so much that I can even forgive Mr Muchamore being an Arsenal fan. This is the second in the Henderson Boys series of books. It takes place in occupied France in 1940 and there is a palpable sense of being a displaced troubled teenager throughout the storyline. The plot is believable and the characters engaging.Mr Henderson is a British Naval intelligence operative who finds himself the only person in France able to provide intelligence on the German plans for invading Britain. A lack of assets means that he has to use the ragtag band of youngsters that he has collected on his journey through France. Increasingly the children prove to be every bit as resourceful as adults, culminating in an explosive conclusion. This book is clearly aimed at the 10-15 market, but it has appeal even for a middle-aged man like me, which may hark back to my days reading Commando and the likes. Spattered in the story are parts of historical facts and even one of the most famous Churchill quotes, so this books may even help young readers put context and feeling to their WW2 studies at school.I plan to go and grab The Secret Army off my son's bookshelf in a little while. less
