review 1: This is hands down the best English version of Inferno I've ever found. The rhyme, the meter, and the style hold true (as much as possible) to Dante's original text - which you can see for yourself in this bilingual edition. This is one of the only editions where the humor and satirical bite come through fully without lessening the overall emotional impact the story is known for. The introduction, map of Hell, and Canto chart are incredibly valuable for readers at all levels because, let's be honest, it's a long complex piece no matter how good the translation is.
review 2: Though it was terribly confusing in all its references, the inferno of Dante was very satisfying to read. I enjoyed the translation of this particular author because he maintained a dedicati... moreon to the form of rhyme used by Dante -- terza rima. It was enjoyable to read the English alongside the Latin so I could see how the flow of the English verse matched the original version. From the perspective of story, I understood this was about the hell Dante felt his life had fallen into. I understood from the horrors described that he had to fall very far into despair before he could "like a ship's mast raise himself again" and "once more see the stars". I can only imagine what drove him to see life so darkly. less
